Performance Task

Demonstrate All Three of Newton's Laws

1Do

Run three quick experiments. (1) INERTIA: place a coin on a card resting over a cup, then flick the card sideways — the coin drops straight down into the cup. (2) F = ma: push a light empty bag, then the same bag loaded with books, using the same effort each time. (3) ACTION–REACTION: sit on a wheeled chair (or wear socks on a smooth floor) and push firmly against a wall.

2Measure

For each test, record what happened. (1) Did the coin shoot sideways with the card, or fall straight into the cup? (2) Which bag sped up faster under the same push? (3) Which way did you roll when you pushed the wall — toward it or away from it?

3Reflect

Match each result to a law: (1) First Law / inertia, (2) Second Law / F = ma, (3) Third Law / action–reaction — competency S9FE-IIa-16. In the Cry of Jelicuon battle scene, a single stomp uses all three: inertia at rest, F = ma in the push-off, and the floor's reaction force launching the performer upward. Explain why a heavier performer and a lighter one stomping equally hard rise to different heights.
